Our History

Bolsey Pharmacy can trace its origins back to the second drug store established in Hastings. J.P. Roberts opened the first drug store in 1851. By 1857, F.D. Ackley was in town and had opened the second store. Ackley, in 1870 took a partner named Slade and the business continued under Ackley and Slade until 1874. In April of that year, Fred Ackley sold the store to Fred Hopkins and Chaducy A. Barnes. Two years later, C.A. Barnes bought out Hopkins and changed the name to City Drug Store. The following year, Barnes took a partner named Wanzer.

On February 6, 1879, Wanzer and Barnes sold out to the Russell Brothers who the sold to W.J. Holloway and L.L. Holloway in December 1879. The Holloways used an elephant as their symbol even having a large wooden elephant outside fo the store to attract attention. They owned the store for almost 30 years.

On April 11, 1918, the Holloways sold to B.A. Lybarker who changed the name to Prescription Drug Store. Lybarker sold, after 34 years, to Ken Hoffman in 1952. Twelve years later, Hoffman sold out to Robert Lapo, who had purchased Tom Taffee's drug store in 1962.

In May of 1970, Lapo sold his store to James Bosley of Ionia, hiring Dave Jasperse to be the manager. In April 1984, Dave and Emily Jasperse bought the store and still own it today. The Medbug was added in 2004.
